Overview
An individual financial reporting and analysis project completed in the role of a financial analyst at a private equity firm. Briefed by the CEO to review one of Barron's 2023 recommended U.S. stock picks, I selected Dell Technologies Inc. and carried out a full performance and position analysis to explain its share price movement and assess whether it represented a good investment opportunity.
What I did
- •Sourced and reviewed Dell Technologies' published annual reports across the past three fiscal years, alongside investor relations materials, press releases, and industry/media commentary
- •Analysed the income statement and balance sheet to assess financial performance (profitability, revenue growth, margins) and financial position (liquidity, gearing, asset efficiency)
- •Calculated and interpreted a range of financial and industry-specific ratios, benchmarking results against competitor and industry averages
- •Explained the drivers behind key ratio and balance sheet movements - going beyond what changed to address how, why, and when during the year
- •Connected the numbers to Dell's broader business strategy, drawing on the business review and executive commentary within the annual report
- •Applied a forward-looking "so what" lens to each finding, considering likely future outcomes and their consequences
- •Structured the report to management-consulting standard: executive summary, detailed analysis, and conclusions with clear, evidence-based recommendations
- •Concluded with a justified recommendation on whether Dell represented a good investment opportunity, tied directly to the share price trend
